Module PART3.EXE caused a General Protection Fault...

Description:

You are unable to load the main program because you get a message box telling you that the program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

Analysis:

In Windows 3.1 or 3.11, this error generally occurs in the video driver DLL or KRNL386.DLL due to an incompatibility between one of the program DLLs and the video driver. In Windows 95, it most often occurs in USER.EXE or KRNL386.DLL

Solution:

Windows 3.1 and 3.11

If the error is occuring in KRNL386.DLL, you should follow the steps below to download a diagnostic utility which will search your system for duplicated system files:

Step 1: Download the Utility
Click here to download the utility program FIX_GPF.EXE (12k). When you are prompted, select "Save to disk" from the box which appears and save the file in the directory in which you installed the typing program.

Step 2: Run the Utility
• Open File Manager
• Open the folder in which you downloaded the FIX_GPF program
• Double-click on the FIX_GPF program
• The program will search your system and report the result
• Select Tidy to rename your duplicate files to xxxx.OLD
• Restart the computer and reinstall your typing product

If the error is occuring in any other DLL, the problem may be due to an incompatibility with your video driver. Follow the steps below to check if this is the case.
• Double-click the Windows Setup icon in the Main group of Program Manager
• From the Options menu select Change System Settings
• Make a note of the current Display setting, and then select VGA from the Display list
• Your computer will restart and when Windows reloads it may look different (lower resolution, fewer colours etc).
Try your typing tutor program and see if you still get an error message. If the program works correctly, then the error was due to a problem with your video driver and you should either contact the video card vendor or search the web for the latest driver, which may fix the problem.
If you still get an error message, try the FIX_GPF utility (see above) which is designed to track down duplicated system files, another common cause of this problem.

Windows 95, 98 and NT 4.0

If the error is occuring in USER.DLL, USER32.DLL, KNRL386.DLL or KERNEL32.DLL, you need to download an updated version of PART3.EXE in which we have fixed this problem.

Step 1: Download the Utility
It is very important that you download the correct version of PART3.EXE depending on the product which you purchased. You need to check the original packaging carefully before you download a file, because only the relevant patch will work properly with your product. If you download the wrong patch, you will experience other error messages when you try to run it.
Note: These patch files are self-extracting ZIP files.

When you are prompted, select "Save to disk" from the box which appears and save the file into the 'Touchtyp' directory on your 'C:\' drive the directory in which you installed the typing program.

Step 2: Extract the program
• Open Explorer (the My Computer icon)
• Open the folder in which you downloaded the PATCH.EXE program
• Double-click on the PATCH.EXE program
• A DOS window will appear and the PART3.EXE file should be extracted without any errors
• Highlight PART3.EXE and choose COPY from the EDIT menu
• Find the folder in which you installed your typing product, and choose PASTE from the EDIT menu
• When asked if you want to overwrite the existing file, choose Yes. If you are not asked, you may have copied the file into the wrong folder. Check that you are overwriting the old version of PART3.EXE with the new one.

Also, please make sure that if you have created any shortcuts or desktop icons for your typing product, that they point to the new PART3.EXE and are not copies of the old PART3.EXE file.

If the error is occuring in any other DLL, the problem may be due to an incompatibility with your video driver. Follow the steps below to check if this is the case.
• Right-click on the desktop and select Properties from the menu which appears
• From the Display Properties window, click the Settings tab
• Click the Change Display Type button
• Make a note of the current Adapter type setting, and then select Change from the Adapter type box
• Select Show all Devices from the box which appears
• Move to the top of the Manufacturers list and select (Standard display types)
• Select Standard display adapter (VGA) from Models list
• Choose OK and follow the steps through to restarting the computer
• Your computer will restart and when Windows reloads it may look different (lower resolution, fewer colours etc).

Try your typing tutor program and see if you still get an error message. If the program works correctly, then the error was due to a problem with your video driver and you should either contact the video card vendor or search the web for the latest driver, which may fix the problem.
If you still get an error message, try the FIX_GPF utility (see above) which is designed to track down duplicated system files, another common cause of this problem.
